Ground broken for two further university buildings

Work starts officially on the “Maison du Nombre” (House of Numbers) and the “Maison des arts et des étudiants” (House of the arts and students).

The ground-breaking ceremony for two more university buildings took place at Belval on 15 March, just two months after the laying of the foundation stone for the Maison de l’Innovation (House of Innovations).

Ministers François Biltgen, Octavie Modert and Marco Schank with Mayoress Lydia Mutsch of Esch/Alzette and Fonds-Belval President Germain Dondelinger fired the official starting shot for work on the “Maison du Nombre” and the neighbouring “Maison des arts et des étudiants” with a festive flag signal.

The two buildings, which were designed by the Luxemburg architectural offices of Witry & Witry, will be situated right beside the main university building, the “Maison du Savoir”, and cover a total of 25,000 m². Around € 83,000,000 have been invested in the two building complexes, which are scheduled for completion in 2015.

The L-shaped “Maison du Nombre” is intended for activities in the research fields of mathematics and IT, and will also house the university’s main computer centre and refrigeration plant.

The cube that is the “Maison des arts et des étudiants”, which has a decidedly artistic look to it with its glass and wood elements, will be used for all sorts of activities associated with the fine arts, design, music, theatre and other forms of artistic expression as well as socio-cultural activities. It will also be the home of the student organisations.
